The Best Way to Get to Nevis

12:29 pm Caribbean Traveller 0 Comments

There are now many options for getting to Nevis but no other provides an experience and the quality of service that Islander Watersports offers.

Islander Watersports is much more than what the name suggests. They not only provide a long list of water sport activities but also a daily water taxi service from Reggae Beach or Port Zante in St. Kitts to Oualie Beach or the Four Seasons on Nevis. The trip only takes a few minutes making it faster then using the public ferry plus you have the treat of an uninhibited view of the shorelines of St. Kitts and Nevis that makes for some picture perfect moments.

Captain and owner Mr. Wincent Perkins can be found at the helm of the vessel on most days making sure you have a safe and comfortable trip across the 'The Narrows'.

Taking the water taxi into Nevis is probably the best of way to begin your vacation in the only Caribbean island to be mentioned on the Best Place to Live Outside the UK list by the Sunday Times. It's cheaper than flying into the island through the Vance Amory Airport, much more convenient than the ferry with respect to handling your luggage and your best option if you'd like a personalized, relaxed trip.

When travelling to Nevis, whether for great seafood or simply to relax, we recommend making your plans with Islander Watersports. They can even arrange airport transfers to or from the dock in St. Kitts if you ask!

No better option in our minds!

Give Islander Watersports a call
when making your travel arrangements
and tell Wincent we said, "Hi!"

7 Things You Must Do in Barbados

2:09 pm Caribbean Traveller 5 Comments

There is a multitude of fun activities and entertainment in Barbados that it would probably be impossible to do everything in one trip.

Barbados' most popular sport, cricket, being played on the beach

So, Caribbean Traveller has put together a few things you must do while in Barbados.

#1 Go to the Beach

This is one is pretty much a "duh" but it must be said. In March 2015, the Crane beach on the south-east coast of Barbados was crowned the "best beach in the Caribbean" by USA Today readers. The island even landed the number 8 spot for its popular east coast picnic and surf location, Bathsheba beach.

With other great options such as Dover, Accra and Brighton beaches, you'd really be doing yourself a disservice not to experience it yourself.

#2. Try Coucou and Flying Fish

It's the national dish of the island and is absolutely delicious when done right. Coucou is made by masterfully mixing corn meal and okra to produce a smooth, thick porridge-like consistency. The flying fish is traditionally steamed and served on top the coucou with tomato based gravy. The combination should be a harmony of flavor that goes down smooth and can keeps you full for a while.

If you get the chance, do indulge (and don't skimp on the gravy!)

#3. Have a Rum Punch

Barbados has a strong bartending and mixology program. Most bars would have a resident expert who can concoct some of the best drink mixes you have ever tasted. Depending on the season, you may be treated to a cocktail made with local fruit and experience something that you may never get at home.

barbados, rum punch, cocktail, drinks, bartending, bars, beach, fruit, rum
Example of a Rum Punch cocktail
Any bartender worth his salt would be able to make you a killer rum punch but be careful. As one of the premier producers of rum, they take their rum mixes very seriously and every location has its signature blend. So if you call yourself a drinker and ask for a stiff one, you may get more than you bargained for.

#4. Watch the Sunrise on East Coast

Ideal for the couple on a romantic getaway or a group of friends who'd like to do something different. No need for a lot of explanation here. Just pack a blanket or coat and choose a nice spot along Bathsheba, Bath or Cattlewash.

If you like to surf, you would be in prime location to catch any early waves.

#5. Swim with the Turtles

There are quite a few water craft operators that facilitate activities such as swimming with the turtles, snorkeling and the like so you have no excuse.

Swimming with the turtles in the crystal clear waters of the West Coast
Experience a relaxing circumnavigation cruise along Barbados' beautiful West Coast, which faces the Caribbean Sea, and they will take you to the best turtle spots so you can get up close and personal. Seeing turtles may be seasonal so make sure to ask about it when making your booking.

#6. Eat somewhere different every day

The island has literally hundreds of places to eat that are offering different kinds of cuisine. If you eat at the fine dining Accra Deck today then you can cheat on your diet and partake some Chefette tomorrow then nip over to a small cafe for some local cuisine the next.

barbados, accra, deck, restaurant, bar, hotel, fine dining, food, eat, view, cuisine
Contemporary fine dining restaurant, Accra Deck
One thing for sure, is the Barbadian palate loves variety and we offer the same variety to our travel guests. Ask just about anyone and they would be able to direct you to the best eats around.

#7. Take a Drive or Ride around the island

This is our top recommendation on getting to know the island. Feel free to drive around without fear of getting lost. The locals are friendly and would be willing to direct you if you need help but if push comes to shove do what any Barbadian would do if they get lost. Locate a bus stop and follow the ones designated "To City".

They will lead you right back into the central areas where you're bound to spot familiar landmarks to make navigation back to your lodgings much easier.

These few things would only 'wet your feet' to multitude of places to stay, things to do and dining options available in the small island of Barbados. You will surely need to return but no longer greeted as a 'tourist' but welcomed like an old friend.

Caribbean Cuisine Reigns Supreme at International Iron Chef 2015

This year's Harbourfront Centre's International Iron Chef competition in Toronto, held on September 6th & 7th, focused on cuisine that was "hot, spicy and sustainable".

The participating chefs were also challenged to use local, sustainable ingredients from their home country. The competition explored global cuisine and encouraged chefs to be innovative about showcasing the traditional flavors of home.

In the end, Chef Ed Harris, born in Cedars St. Lucia, who came out victorious. His involvement was in part coordinated by the Saint Lucia Tourist Board but it was his renowned skills and passion for the art that spotlighted this extremely talented chef and allowed him to represent his country in the competition.

The Saint Lucia Tourist Board reports that their participation in the competition sparked a lot of interest in the island as Chef Ed and Canada battled closely to the finish. They laud his use of ingredients from St. Lucia to keep his dishes aligned with the culinary tastes of the island as an important aspect towards his title win.

Vacationing in 'The Best Place to Live Outside the UK'

In March this year, Nevis was the only island in the Caribbean on the Sunday Times list of the best places to live outside of the UK because it was "one of the last ‘authentic’ islands in the West Indies with deserted beaches, nestling leatherback turtles and wild donkeys and goats roaming the lanes" and it provided "arty and laid-back living in the sun".

Though we can't agree that Nevis is the last island in the region providing an authentic Caribbean experience, we can confirm that the sister island to St. Kitts is definitely the ideal location for laid back living in the tropics and a great choice for any traveller or prospective re-locators.

Here are our Top 4 Reasons for Traveling to Nevis

#1: A Rich History

Nevis is known as being the birthplace for Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding father of the United States, and is one of the major territories of Britain before independence in 1983. Once there you can visit the museum dedicating to this champion of U.S. independence, visit the historical sites echoing the legacy of British rule or see the very first hotel opened in the Caribbean.

#2: Unspoilt natural environment

Though developing as a destination, Nevis has maintained a lot of its natural scenery. Even its most luxurious accommodations are surrounded by lush vegetation that keeps the sunny island cool and provides the relaxing feeling of living amongst nature but with the comforts of civilization. Not to worry though. There is the occasional free roaming animal to remind you that, though you may be in a three star resort, secluded villa or settling in to a new house in the Nevis countryside, you are not in the big city anymore.

Hikes are regularly conducted up the slopes of Nevis Peak for the nature travellers who really want to get in touch with their surroundings. There are also various locally owned rental agencies for adventurous visitors who would like to explore on their own.

#3: Fresh seafood and Mouth-watering Cuisine

The island is noted for the availability of fresh lobster and seafood prepared Nevisian style but that is not the only treat for your tastebuds. If you've never tasted true Caribbean cooking, Nevis is one of those islands that would be poised to 'knock your socks off'. No big explanation needed; just an empty stomach and a ready palate.

#4: Plenty of Things to Do; Not A lot of Fuss

One of the major complaints about living in a big city would be the constant hustle and bustle of the people as well as all the noise and intrusion that comes with it. Nevis manages to have quite a bit of activity going on in the island without the hullabaloo of large towns.

Mostly, the water sports would be where its at and the beach is never too far away to take a cool dip but there is also a lot available for nature lovers, foodies, water sports enthusiasts and some nightlife for those Friday nights when you just want to dance!

Docked at Anchorage Inn

Out of truly humble and heartwarming beginnings, the reputation of Anchorage Inn in Antigua as the 'The Caring Inn' accurately represents the attitude and atmosphere of the place.

Approaching View of the Anchorage Inn, Antigua and Barbuda

The staff are genuinely warm and inviting and the hotel itself offers low key comfort but great value. Every room provides a measure of self-sufficiency with a distinctive Caribbean style that gives some "home away from home" comfort and sets the tone for a more "real" experience of an Antigua.

Anchorage Inn is near the airport, the town and just a few minutes away from one of the most popular beaches in Antigua, Dickenson's Bay. If asked, a shuttle service can be arranged to take from their doorstep to the shoreline or, if you'd rather just stay in and relax, get a drink and kick back by the pool.

Amenities are no more than a few minutes walk away, if you choose not to rent a vehicle, which makes this boutique hotel great for budget travellers; especially students, backpackers, thrifty couples and families.

For those of us who are very conscious about where their dollars are spent. Every Christmas, Anchorage Inn sponsors and hosts a party for underprivileged children in Antigua. So you could rest assured that you'd be supporting a business with charity at its heart.

Take a trip to Antigua & Barbuda and check out Anchorage Inn as your chosen place to stay.
